American goes to Britain to discover how his brother was killed during the war, encountering evasion and misdirection while trying to learn the truth.
Excellent film, one of Tourneur's best. Interesting parallels with The Third Man: brash American in search of truth, who finds it despite everyone warning him away, only to find that perhaps it's better not to know after all. Fine performances by the whole cast, but especially Goring, who is fantastically fey. Only detriment is a trite and twee romantic happy ending that seems tacked on (and probably was). Nonetheless, this is a film that rewards re-watching, and deserves to be much more well known.
Thanks to Philly for fixing some errors!
